Presente.org Responds to Denver Police Officers Being Cleared in the Shooting Death of Jesse Hernandez

June 8, 2015

Statement from Arturo Carmona, Executive Director of Presente.org:

“It’s now clear that the Latino community will not get justice for the police murder of Jessie Hernandez unless the Attorney General Loretta Lynch steps in. DenverDistrict Attorney Mitch Morrissey's decision not to charge the two officers who shot and killed 17-year-old Jessie Hernandez on January 26th is appalling, but not surprising. The D.A.'s office has a track record of defending police abuse — in fact, they haven’t charged a police officer accused of abuse since 1992.

What's evenmore appalling is that Morrissey blamed Jessie for her own death. This should be a red flag for the Department of Justice signaling the complete disregard for Latinos on behalf of the Denver Police. We call on U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to investigate the Denver Police as has been done in similar cases in South Carolina and Maryland."
