Nation’s Largest Online Latino Organizing Group Responds to NY Governor Cuomo’s Ban on Fracking

Dec. 17, 2014

New York, NY - Today, New York’s Governor Cuomo announced a ban on fracking.

In response Arturo Carmona, Executive Director of Presente.org, released the following statement:

"We are elated to hear that Governor Cuomo’s administration will ban fracking in New York State. Fracking is an extremely dangerous practice that poisons communities of color across the country, as we often live near fracking wells and oil refineries.”

“This ban also ups the ante for governors throughout the country, especially Governor Brown in California, who should follow suit and ban fracking as well. Communities of color that live near fracking sites in California and throughout the nation are currently experiencing headaches, nosebleeds, rare forms of cancer, and respiratory diseases associated with fracking practices, such as oil drilling and extraction.”

“The health of American citizens is at high risk due to methane and other chemical emissions produced from fracking, and Latinos continue to be disproportionately impacted by these practices, which harm the environment and our communities. It’s up to governors throughout the United States to eliminate this imminent threat and ban fracking once and for all.”
