Democrats Must Use Power to Deliver on Their Promises
Immigrant communities must be fully included
CHICAGO ββ This week, the Senate Budget Committee released top priorities for its second budget reconciliation package. According to early reports, this reconciliation package includes funding for critical immigration policy changes that will allow the nation to begin to set the record straight about the invaluable contribution all immigrants make to the U.S. The following is a joint statement from Alianza Americas and Presente.org:
βThe proposed budget resolution framework includes $3.5 trillion in total investments, making this the largest public funding initiative since FDRβs New Deal. It is encouraging to see our congressional leaders taking their duty seriously to tackle long delayed changes in critical social and economic policies that if implemented well, would set the nation in a positive course. We welcome this inclusive proposal that will help the entire nation recover from the devastating impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and tackle this recovery from the principle of building back better. As we learn more details about the reconciliation package, weβre encouraged by the inclusion of immigration policy provisions. We will work hard to ensure these provisions include long-ignored changes that should enable millions of undocumented immigrants to apply for permanent residency visas. The time is now for Democrats to deliver for all families, but particularly for immigrant families who are and will continue to be so central for the future of our nation,β said Oscar Chacon, executive director of Alianza Americas.
βA budget reconciliation package that invests in combating the climate crisis, invests in working people, and provides funding to support a path towards permanent protections for undocumented families is something worth fighting for. Migrant and immigrant communities have been on the frontlines battling the COVID-19 pandemic and represent an important segment of the essential workers keeping our economy going. Providing a way for undocumented immigrants to secure permanent residency visas will not only have economic benefits, but also ensure the dignified inclusion of so many immigrants. This step in the right direction would not have been possible without the leadership of organizers and activists from across the country who have been relentlessly fighting every day to ensure elected officials deliver for immigrant families.β said Matt Nelson, executive director of Presente.org.

CHICAGO ββ Esta semana, el ComitΓ© de Presupuesto del Senado dio a conocer las principales prioridades para su segundo paquete de conciliaciΓ³n presupuestaria. SegΓΊn los primeros informes, este paquete de reconciliaciΓ³n incluye fondos para cambios muy necesarios en polΓtica de inmigraciΓ³n que permitirΓ‘n a la naciΓ³n comenzar a reconocer la invaluable contribuciΓ³n que todas las personas inmigrantes hacen a los EE. UU. La siguiente es una declaraciΓ³n conjunta de Alianza Americas y Presente.org:
βEl marco general presupuestario acordado por un grupo clave de legisladores DemΓ³cratas incluye una inversiΓ³n pΓΊblica de $3.5 billones, que de ser aprobado lo convertirΓa en el monto de gasto pΓΊblico mΓ‘s grande desde el “New Deal” de Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Es alentador ver que nuestros lΓderes del Congreso se toman en serio su deber de abordar los cambios atrasados en las polΓticas sociales y econΓ³micas crΓticas que, si se implementan bien, pondrΓan a la naciΓ³n en un curso positivo. Damos la bienvenida a esta propuesta inclusiva que ayudarΓ‘ a toda la naciΓ³n a recuperarse de los devastadores impactos causados ββpor la pandemia de COVID-19 y abordarΓ‘ esta recuperaciΓ³n desde el principio de reconstruir mejor.
